Siemens Invests in All-Optical Switching Manufacturer OMM

Investments From Two Funds Underscore Strategic Move to Deploy Technology in Siemens Optical Cross Connect Systems

Santa Clara, Calif., July 24, 2000 - Siemens Venture Capital (SVC) and Mustang Ventures, the corporate venture group of Siemens Information and Communication Networks, today announced a joint investment in Optical Micro-Machines Inc. (OMM) of San Diego, California, as part of OMM's most recent financing round. The multi-million dollar investment, shared equally by the two funds, reinforces an earlier announcement by Siemens Information and Communication Networks that OMM optical switch modules will be used in Siemens TransXpress Optical Service Node (OSN) - the world's first optical cross connect system.

"Siemens' investment in OMM represents our belief in a strong future for optical switching and in OMM, specifically," said Jost Spielvogel, Member of the Group Board, Siemens Information and Communication Networks. "Siemens is much more than an investor in OMM," said Hus Tigli, President and CEO of OMM Inc.

"As a global communications leader, Siemens gives OMM access to a global market." Siemens TransXpress OSN allows service providers to effectively move Internet Protocol (IP) traffic over an open DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) platform, which ties different point-to-point links to a real optical network. Its distinguishing features focus on distance extension, protection and restoration, aggregation and intelligent routing.

About OMM:

  • OMM is a global leader in supplying MEMS-based all-optical switching solutions to communications OEMs. The company's switching solutions are available as modules with integrated drive electronics or subsystems that incorporate board-level electronics and related opto-electronic components that can be used in all-optical cross connect or add-drop multiplexing configurations. The company's advanced capabilities in MEMS, opto-electronics packaging and automation in manufacturing have made it possible to deliver the first commercially available all-optical switching subsystems.
